Best social media MCP server? Ten compared on sign-in, write scopes and approval gates
Ten social media MCP servers checked on October 30, 2026: how Buffer, Postiz, Ayrshare, DunSocial, X and others sign in, which scopes they offer, what an agent can write, and which can let the agent approve its own post.
TL;DR
- The best social media MCP server is one whose approval gate your agent cannot open. Of ten checked on October 30, 2026, DunSocial splits drafting, scheduling and publishing into separate scopes, while Ayrshare and Social Champ can let one connection approve its own post.
- Eight of the ten answered a request with no credentials with HTTP 401 and a pointer to OAuth metadata, the discovery step the MCP spec requires. Postiz gave no pointer, and Ayrshare signs in only with a static API key.
- Advertised scopes ran from none to 22. Metricool and WoopSocial offer just read and write, 1Social offers sign-in scopes only, and X's hosted server lists 22 scopes, none of which lets an agent post.
- Two approvals exist: the AI app's prompt before a tool runs, which a user can switch off, and a hold inside the scheduler. Only the second binds an unattended agent, and only if no tool lets it approve.
- overads' MCP server signs in with OAuth 2.1 or an API key, offers six scopes and has no tool that approves a post. Its posts:write scope does not separate scheduling from publishing.
What a social media MCP server is
A social media MCP server is a scheduler's or platform's bridge that lets an AI app, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, list your connected accounts and create, schedule or publish posts by calling tools. It speaks the Model Context Protocol, so any MCP client can use it without custom code. Our guide to what an MCP server is covers the protocol itself.
Most of these servers can do the same headline job: schedule a post. They differ in three places that decide whether an agent is safe to leave running: how it signs in, how finely its permissions are split, and whether a post can wait for a person in a way the agent cannot undo. This comparison covers ten public servers on those three points, with overads in the last row.
How the ten servers sign in
Eight of the ten social media MCP servers answered an unauthenticated request on October 30, 2026 with HTTP 401 and a pointer to their OAuth metadata. That pointer is what the MCP authorization spec requires: servers must publish OAuth 2.0 Protected Resource Metadata, and an AI app reads it to find where to send you to sign in. The same document lists the scopes the server offers, which is the fourth column below.
| Server | Sign-in, per its docs | Answer with no credentials | OAuth scopes advertised |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | OAuth for most AI tools; Buffer also mentions a personal API key | 401, with OAuth metadata | 12, split by area: posts, ideas, account, insights, engagements, snippets, channels |
| Metricool | OAuth sign-in; an API key in an X-Mc-Auth header for n8n | 401, with OAuth metadata | 2: mcp:read and mcp:write |
| Postiz | API key as a Bearer token or inside the URL; OAuth tokens for apps built for other Postiz users | 401, no OAuth metadata | None advertised |
| Ayrshare | A static Bearer API key only; no OAuth | 200: setup and the tool list answer without a key; every tool call needs one | None: one key reaches all 33 tools |
| Zernio | OAuth, or a Bearer API key for clients without it | 401, with OAuth metadata | 13, including posts:write, messaging:write, ads:write and money:write |
| DunSocial | OAuth; you pick one workspace and the scopes to grant | 401, with OAuth metadata and a scope hint | 8, with drafts, scheduling, publishing and deleting as separate scopes |
| Social Champ | Sign in to Social Champ and approve | 401, with OAuth metadata | 3: read_profile, manage_post and manage_team |
| WoopSocial | OAuth for Claude, Claude Code, Codex and Notion; an API key in the URL for ChatGPT and others | 401, with OAuth metadata | 2: woopsocial:read and woopsocial:write |
| 1Social | OAuth in a browser; no API keys | 401, with OAuth metadata | Sign-in scopes only (openid, profile, email, offline_access), none per action |
| X (official) | OAuth 2.0 through the local xurl bridge and your own X developer app; an app-only token for reads | 401, with OAuth metadata | 22, none of them tweet.write |
| overads | OAuth 2.1 for ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code; an API key for other clients | 401, with OAuth metadata and all six scopes in the challenge | 6: connections:read, posts:read, posts:write, media:write, workflows:run, analytics:read |
Three rows need a note. Ayrshare documents that its server authenticates only with a static Bearer header, so a personal custom connector on claude.ai, Claude Desktop or Claude mobile cannot use it, per its connection guide. X's MCP page says its hosted server does not advertise native MCP OAuth discovery, yet on October 30, 2026 it answered with a metadata pointer; the page still routes sign-in through the xurl bridge and your own X app. Postiz's MCP introduction and WoopSocial's client guide both document an API key placed in the server URL. The MCP spec says access tokens must not go in a URL query string, and a key in a URL tends to end up in logs and browser history, so prefer the header or OAuth route where a client offers one.
Scope count matters because an AI app asks for what the server offers. A server with only read and write cannot let you grant "draft but never publish". DunSocial is the one server here whose MCP page documents scoped access for writing drafts, scheduling, publishing and destructive actions separately.
What each server lets an agent change
Every social media MCP server in this comparison can create or schedule posts, except X's hosted server, which documents no tool that creates a post. The table lists the writes each vendor documents, whether a post can go out at once, and whether it can wait for a person.
| Server | Writes it documents | Publish at once? | Draft or hold for a person | Can the same connection approve? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | create_post, edit_post, delete_post, ideas and post templates | Yes, a shareNow mode | saveToDraft; posts can carry a needs_approval status | No approve tool listed |
| Metricool | create_scheduled_post and update_scheduled_post; also inbox, reviews and ad campaigns | Its guide says posts can be created and published | Not documented on its MCP pages | Not documented |
| Postiz | 13 tools; schedulePostTool takes draft, schedule or now | Yes, type now | Drafts; client review is a preview link with comments, not a hold | No approval state documented |
| Ayrshare | 33 tools: posts, comments, direct messages, webhooks, profiles, ad boosts that spend money | Yes | create_post takes requiresApproval | Yes: update_post takes approved, which approves and publishes |
| Zernio | posts_create among a long tool list; inbox replies and ads | Yes, publish_now | is_draft; no approval step documented | Not documented |
| DunSocial | 53 tools: schedule, publish now, reschedule, cancel, delete, drafts, memory, media | Yes, with the publishing scope | Says AI-written work waits for a person to confirm | No approve tool listed |
| Social Champ | 43 tools: create, update, delete, bulk schedule and delete, clear a queue | Not documented | Approval tools: list pending, approve, reject, remind | Yes: approval_approve, when the signed-in user is an approver |
| WoopSocial | posts_create, posts_delete, and deleting projects and accounts | Not documented | Not documented | Not documented |
| 1Social | Publish now or up to 30 days ahead, retry, edit, unschedule, delete | Yes | Not documented | Not documented |
| X (official) | Bookmarks and Articles, including publishing an Article | Articles only | None | None |
| overads | create_post, update_post, delete_post (cancels only), media, run_workflow, draft_on_brand_post | No publish-now tool; a post goes out at its scheduled time | Require approval workspace rule, off until an owner or admin turns it on; a per-post flag | No: no tool or API call approves a post |
The sources for each row: Buffer's developer guide; Metricool's connection guide and scheduling guide; Postiz's tools reference and approval page; Ayrshare's tool catalog and update-post reference; Zernio's MCP docs; DunSocial's agents page; Social Champ's tool reference, updated September 15, 2026; WoopSocial's tools reference; 1Social's MCP page; and overads' MCP tool reference.
Tool counts are not a quality score. Zernio's agents page counts 496 tools over one endpoint, with about 50 shown to the AI app and the rest found on demand. A long list covers more jobs, such as ads and direct messages, and it also gives an agent more ways to change something you did not ask it to.
X is a special case. Its hosted server reads posts, users, trends and bookmarks, and writes only bookmarks and Articles. X's open-source xmcp server, which you run yourself, turns every X API operation into a tool, including createPosts, and an X_API_TOOL_ALLOWLIST setting limits which tools load.
Approval in the AI app versus approval in the scheduler
A social media MCP server can hold a post for a person in two different places, and only one of them is enforced by the scheduler. The first is the AI app's own confirmation prompt. Buffer's MCP guide notes that most MCP clients ask before running a tool that writes, and advises leaving those prompts on, because create_post can publish immediately. The prompt lives in the AI app, under the user's settings, and an unattended agent may run where no one sees it.
The second is a hold inside the scheduler: the post is saved, marked as waiting, and not delivered until someone approves it there. That hold is only as strong as the tools around it. Two servers in this comparison expose approval to the same connection that creates the post:
- Ayrshare: create_post accepts requiresApproval, and update_post accepts approved, which Ayrshare's reference says approves and publishes the post. The server's tool list, read on October 30, 2026, includes approved on update_post.
- Social Champ: approval_approve approves a post waiting for review when the signed-in user is a stage approver for it.
Both are useful for a person who manages approvals from an AI app. For an agent that should not publish on its own, they mean the hold rests on how the account was set up, not on the server. Check which user the connection signs in as, and whether that user is an approver.
overads takes the other route. Its scheduling and approvals guide says there is no API call that approves a post; a member approves it in the app. When the workspace rule is on, a post an agent creates or edits lands as pending, and a publish-now call on it is refused.
Which social media MCP server fits which job
The best social media MCP server for a team is the one whose sign-in, scopes and approval match how much the agent should do alone. On the docs read on October 30, 2026:
- An agent that should draft and never publish: DunSocial's separate draft, schedule and publish scopes let you grant drafting only. Buffer's saveToDraft and Postiz's draft type work too, but they rest on the agent choosing that option.
- A team already on Buffer or Metricool: both connect by OAuth, and Buffer says MCP access is on every Buffer plan.
- A self-hosted stack: Postiz runs its MCP server inside the Postiz backend, so a self-hosted install has its own endpoint.
- Comments, direct messages or ad boosts as well as posts: Ayrshare and Zernio document those tools. Treat the API key or connection as able to spend and reply in your name.
- Posting to X only: X's hosted server does not post, so use a scheduler's server or run xmcp with an allowlist.
How to connect a social media MCP server safely
Connecting a social media MCP server safely takes five checks, made before the agent schedules its first post.
- Prefer OAuth sign-in over a pasted key, and never put a key in a URL when a header or OAuth works.
- Grant the fewest scopes the job needs. Where the server offers read-only, start there and add write scopes later.
- Turn on the scheduler's own approval hold if it has one, and check that the connected user cannot approve through the server.
- Keep the AI app's confirmation prompts on for tools that publish or delete.
- Know where to disconnect the app: most of these products list connected apps in their settings, and removing the server from the AI app alone may leave the grant alive on the scheduler's side.

How this comparison was made
This social media MCP server comparison combines a measured check with the vendors' own docs, all on October 30, 2026. The ten servers are the hosted servers of social media schedulers that publish their MCP endpoint and tool docs, plus X as the one network with an official server.
- Each endpoint received one MCP initialize request with no credentials. The HTTP status and the WWW-Authenticate header were recorded.
- Each server's OAuth Protected Resource Metadata was fetched from its well-known address, and its scopes_supported list was recorded as the advertised scopes.
- Ayrshare documents that its tool list answers before sign-in, so that list was read too: 33 tools.
- Every other cell comes from the vendor's own pages, linked above. "Not documented" means the pages read did not say, not that the feature is missing.
No account was connected to any third-party server and nothing was posted, so no row reports how a server behaves after sign-in. Vendors change these servers often; re-check a row before relying on it.
Where overads fits
overads is an AI marketing agent for small teams, and its MCP server lets an AI app draft and schedule posts to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Pinterest. It connects ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code by OAuth 2.1 sign-in and other clients by API key, per the MCP setup docs, and it is included on every plan. A connection works in the one workspace picked at sign-in.
What overads does not do:
- Its posts:write scope covers creating, editing, scheduling and cancelling posts as one grant. It cannot give an agent drafting without scheduling, as DunSocial's scopes can.
- Posts wait for a person only when an owner or admin has turned on Require approval. A per-post approval flag that an agent sets, it can also clear; only the workspace rule binds it.
- It has no MCP tools for comments or direct messages, and it does not publish to Threads, YouTube and TikTok yet.
- delete_post cancels a post that has not gone out; it removes nothing already published.
When another server fits better: Ayrshare or Zernio if the agent must also answer comments and messages, Postiz for a self-hosted stack, and Buffer or Metricool if the team already schedules there.
Frequently asked questions
Is a social media MCP server the same as a social media API?
No. The API is the vendor's REST interface for code you write; the MCP server offers the same actions as tools an AI app can discover and call. Ayrshare and overads both document their MCP tools as running through the same rules as their REST API.
Can an agent delete a post that is already live?
It depends on the server. Buffer warns that delete_post cannot be undone and that not every post can be deleted; 1Social deletes from networks that allow it. overads' delete_post cancels a draft or scheduled post and removes nothing from any platform.
Do I need a separate MCP server for each network?
Not usually. Every scheduler in the tables publishes to several networks through one endpoint. 1Social also offers one endpoint per network, and X's own server covers X only.
